(1) Making the room nice and dark and quiet when your baby naps during the day.

You may suppose this is a good strategy in hopes that the tot will sleep longer so you can get some rest. BUT, it really isn't helpful in the long run - i.e. Bedtime. When your newborn takes naps during the day have plenty of daylight in the house. Let normal household and street noises exist. The less time the child sleeps during the day could mean better sleep at night.

(2) Letting your child


just lie around in the crib or child carrier.

It is tempting to just let the baby lie around so you can do other things. However, once again this is not in your best interest. the child needs to be lively when awake. This could induce sleep at night. Don't you sleep better at night when you have been out all day running around?

Find ways to introduce physical activity


for the baby. Play games, take the tot out for a fun outing to see new places and things. My little niece loves to people watch.

(3) Picking up your kid as soon as the crying starts at night.

Believe it or not, the kid might not even be really awake! I know I did this all the time with my kid. I did not know any better. I learned that if you rub the abdomen, the infant just might stop crying and go back to sleep.

(4) Play games that excite the child.

When all the family is home in the evening they want to play with the kid. That is okay as long as the activities are RELAXING for the tot! Tell Dad not to play airplane or catch the baby in the air before bedtime. If you have other kids, let them know not to excite the tot.

The best thing would be to hold your kid and read. Clear out the crib i.e. get the toys out. Give the kid a favorite toy to settle down with.

(5) Have no pattern for bedtime.

So, one night you do everything in your room after the bath. The next night in the living room and the next night in the baby's room or even the kitchen! This is not a good idea. Your tot needs to recognize when it is time for bed, end of the day - finito!

So do your best to begin the routine at the same time everyday and in the same room. Have a specific nighttime song i.e. lullaby or music. Have a bedtime book to read.

How Long should I Let My Newborn Sleep For?

Newborn sleep is one thing that women who are mothers for the first time worry about. If you are a new mom, you might be concerned about whether your baby is getting enough sleep. The following is a guide to what you should expect, but you must remember that each baby will be different. Even if this isn't your first child, this baby will not be the same as any of the others.


Newborn babies usually sleep about 16-17 hours in a 24-hour period. Most babies will not sleep through the night until they're at least 3 months old. There are several reasons why. First of all, their stomachs are very small and they'll get hungry faster, especially if you're breastfeeding your baby. Breast milk is much more easily digested than formula, and your baby will need to feed more often, especially in the beginning.

Babies also have shorter sleep cycles than adults do and have shorter dream cycles. In general, though, a newborn baby should sleep about 8 or nine hours during the day and 8 hours or so at night. They won't sleep 8 hours straight, though. In the beginning, those sleep times will be very short.

As the baby gets older, up to about 2 years of age, she'll still be sleeping 13-14 hours, but the amount of daytime sleep will diminish month-by-month. By age 2, your baby should be sleeping through the night with a 2-hour nap during the day. Remember that all babies' sleep patterns are different, for example some need two naps per day while others make do with one longer nap. At this age though, try to discourage naps too late in the afternoon, as this can make it harder to get them to sleep a few hours later at bed time.

Once a baby begins to regularly sleep through the night, parents are often dismayed when he/she begins to awaken in the night again. This typically happens at about 6 months of age and is often a normal part of development called separation anxiety.

Again, this will vary by child. Relax if this seems different from your newborn baby. Sleep needs vary a lot between individual babies and it is not beneficial to compare your newborn's sleep patterns with others.

Submerging your baby's belly in water is a great way to help too. This is said to help release some uncomfortable pressure off the baby. We use to bathe our son in a baby bowl bath that was great for him since it submerged him all the way up to his shoulders. It assisted with his colic symptoms and kept him warm. There are also many many different gripe waters out there that are said to help your child's colic symptoms. Not all help some babies. What helps for your neighbor's baby may not work for your youngster's colic symptoms.

Helping a baby with colic is hard and frustrating. Just have patience and try and try again! Most people tend to feel like they are bad parents, when they can't seem to soothe their screaming baby, but this is completely common. However, I wanted to take a slightly different approach. In this cyber world of emoticons and acronyms, I'm going to do my darnedest to make these pixels express my feelings about baby slings and why I do it.

Reason 1: It feels good

Flashback. The year, 2002. Handsome hubby and I have been married for just 10 months when our baby girl couldn't wait to surprise us. Nine months later, there she was: head full a black hair, big blue eyes with the loooongest eyelashes, and that funny gobbler chin. We were both in school and working, but I knew I couldn't bear to ever leave her, and my incredible husband afforded me the great blessing and honor of staying home with my baby. Were we poor? Heck yes! But we had faith, a beautiful baby, and we were happy. I carried her in the ugliest baby sling ever documented, but she was cute enough to make up for it. Her first year I'm not sure her head ever hit a pillow. What does a stay at home mom of one delightful infant do with her time? Nothing! And that's just how it should be. She never left my side. I talked to her. Sang to her. Sat with her. And I was happy.

Reason 2: You can get things done AND hold your baby

Now it's 2004. 10 days overdue in the record-breaking end of August heat, and 9.5 pound baby boy finally decides to join us on the outside. Fuzzy white hair. Blue eyes. And once again, looong eyelashes. My newly graduated husband has accepted a real grown-up job in Portland, Oregon, and we make the move with our two year old and two week old. Fortunately, I came across some slightly stretchy, sweet striped fabric on clearance and made a killer baby sling. Baby boy was all cuddled up in there while I packed with him. I talked & sang to him. I barely sat down. I was happy!

In Portland, I didn't know anyone, didn't know where the grocery store was, how the streets worked, nothing! We moved just as the rains were taking their permanent winter spot. Our families were hundreds of miles away. My husband was working full time for the first time in our marriage. I became depressed. My greatest solace was in those rare occasions of blissful silence when I looked at my baby's fat roll little body sleeping sweetly in the baby pouch against me. My two year old was a hilarious handful, so my chubby buddy practically lived in that baby sling carrier while I chased his big sis around the house, around the gymnastics studio & around the grocery store. I could hear his little baby sighs & see his little baby twitches. He could hear my heart beat while I rubbed his squishy little back through the sling. I talked to him about unpacking. I sang a song of settling in & I finally got to sit. I was happy.

Reason 3: It saves my sanity

Another couple of years and another move later, baby 3 shoots into this world in just 36 minutes flat. We've bought our first home with all of its ensuing projects. We started a business. We volunteered. Some days I can't, can't, can't do it all. Sometimes I snap under the pressure and turn into Momzilla - which always makes me cry as I take my precious little ones under my wing, yelling "TO HECK WITH HOUSEWORK!" and read book after book after book & then go to the park until it's too dark to see the slide.

I think about baby number one and mumble, "What on earth did I do all day with just one?" Now I barely stand still for thirty seconds at a time. Mom, make breakfast. Mom, we have no clean clothes. Mom, there's gum in my hair. I'm still hungry. He's stinky. I'm tired. That spilled. School fundraiser. Dozen cookies. Lost shoe. Hungry. Baby crying.

Oh, that baby crying. He hardly ever cries. He's the happiest little clam. But when he does cry and I say "I'm just doing this one more thing. Just a minute." My heart breaks just a little. I put him in my spiffy new cocoa brown HugaMonkey baby sling. He reaches up with a smile and tugs on my hoodie strings. Oh, those eyelashes! I ruffle the long black hair. He smiles more. I give him a little hug and soar with joy that he's curled up in front of me in that baby pouch. He sees my face. I sing while I cook. I talk while I wash. I sit while I tie shoes. I'm immensely happy.

Reason 4: I love my kids

I always want to spend every waking moment with my kids. I miss my grown up girl when she's at kindergarten for three whole hours. We have tea parties and dress up plays and car races. These are my three best friends. Any device that helps me be a better Mom while being practical, simple, and beautiful should win some sort of major award.
